GAIL Deering Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
The Deering Vineyard has deep roots in Sonoma wine history — once part of the original Beltane Ranch parcels on Nelligan Road, it was a source for Kenwood’s legendary Artist Series wines. Today it is owned by Todd Maus and organically farmed by Chuy Ordaz and his family. The site spans over twelve varietals, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel on volcanic basalt, shale, and sandstone bedrock.
GAIL’s approach to Cabernet Sauvignon is not about meeting expectations — it’s about expressing the site. The wine is a blend of two clones: older vines from a Jack London Vineyard clone alongside younger vines grafted from the Montecillo Vineyard up the road. Just over a ton was harvested from the Maus block on the lower slopes of the Moon Mountain bench at approximately 460 feet.
A short 2-day cold soak preceded fermentation, with 14 days on the skins. Pressed into neutral oak barrels for secondary fermentation, followed by 10 months of sur lie ageing. Aromas of dusty bay leaf, blackberry, and anise. Flavours of Santa Rosa plum, blueberry, and mint.
