Seabold Eden Rift Pinot Noir 2018
Eden Rift is the oldest continually-producing estate vineyard in California, first planted in 1849. Located in San Benito County’s Cienega Valley, it sits atop the San Andreas Fault line, sharing the same soils, climate, and clonal material as its famous neighbour, Calera. Cold Monterey Bay air channels through the Gabilan Range on its way to Mt. Harlan and Chalone, and the soils here boast some of the highest concentrations of limestone in Western Hemisphere winegrowing regions.
The North Slope is a naturally terraced lieu-dit that sits behind a hill, shielding the vines from Monterey Bay winds. Morning fog collects in this little nook, making it the coldest part of the property — and the source of a Pinot Noir of remarkable complexity and precision.
Hand-harvested at night, hand-sorted, with 65% whole cluster retention. Native yeast fermentation in stainless steel, then transferred to third-fill barriques and puncheons for 15 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
