Description
East of the Santa Rita Hills and southwestern reaches of the exclusive
Ballard Canyon AVA, lies a nationally recognized viticultural area. This slice of
heaven is only 7,800 acres nestled within the Santa Ynez Valley AVA.
It is a place of significant diurnal shifts, where morning fog rolls in from the ocean,
and retreats as warm sun drenches the mountain landscape. This brings forth
fruit unique to its terroir. The signature at J+K Vineyard is
unparalleled within the appellation. The terraced planting pours down the
vineyards tallest peak, encircling steep rows of Syrah that rise from the base of
the hillside. From an elevation under 600 ft; all the way up to the peak at 722 ft;, the
planting style is evocative of hillside vineyards in the Côtes du Rhône as are the
varietals that grace the landscape. J+K Vineyard continues in the legacy of their
predecessor, Jorian Hill, using organic and sustainable farming practices.
The Wine:
A blend of Viognier and Chardonnay. Grapes were picked at 21 brix, de-
stemmed then filled into a 500L puncheon where they fermented for a few
weeks. The wine was aged on the skins for 10 months. After 10 months and
before harvest 2022 the puncheon was drained of wine, put on its side to remove
the head and scoop out the spent grapes. The grapes were gently pressed and
all wine was sent back to the puncheon to settle out in barrel for another 3
months prior to bottling.
