Description
What is Mencia? Mencía, known as Jaen in Portugal, is a grape variety native to the western part of the Iberian Peninsula. Mencia, often pale and light due to farming in low fertile lands, has a new generation of winemakers rehabilitating old vineyards on the hillsides of Spain. I love these wines, so this is my Ode to Mencia.
Alisos Canyon has been renowned for its high-quality fruit for decades, and locals sought to give this informal recognition a more formal
status by applying for their own AVA. The region is located in Santa Barbara County and covers 5,775 acres south of the Santa Maria Valley AVA near the town of Los Alamos. Much like the town of Santa Ynez itself, Los Alamos offers the visitor a step back in history to a time when stagecoaches and railroads reigned supreme. Nolan Ranch Vineyard is relatively new, but it will only take a few years before it’s front page.
Exceptional farming! Alisos Canyon is cooler than Santa Ynez, but warmer than Santa Maria Valley, which means it has a wide diversity of wine varieties.
