Sandar & Hem Mountain Winery 2020

A rare Chardonnay from one of California's historic vineyard sites. Mountain Winery sits high above Silicon Valley on steep south-facing slopes of gravelly loam and fractured Franciscan shale. Originally planted by Burgundian pioneer Paul Masson around the turn of the 20th century, the vineyard was replanted in 2004 with cuttings from its historic vines. Sandar & Hem were the first winery outside the venue to make a single-vineyard Chardonnay from the site.

The 2020 is precise, mineral and beautifully lifted, with citrus, lemongrass, white flowers and subtle nutty notes. On the palate, bright acidity and a taut, angular structure are balanced by a distinctive stony character and long, refreshing finish. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 93 points, calling out its citrus, lemongrass and light nut aromas.
